Repeat Prescriptions Policy
The General Medical Council´s new advice regarding repeat prescriptions is stated as follows:
"Before signing a repeat prescription, a doctor must be satisfied that it is safe and appropriate to do so.
Arrangements for issuing repeat prescriptions should include suitable provision for monitoring each patient's condition.
(Repeat prescriptions - take care, GMC News 1999 Issue 5) "
This directive is a result of the GMC's review of clinical governance following recent much reported medical mishaps.
In effect, it means that all patients on continuing medication must be re-examined every three months; prescriptions for medicines taken occasionally are subject to annual review. |
